It was dark by the time Scott and I boarded the last bus to London. As Oxford rolled away from us, there was a claustrophobic tightening of time. Sunday night has always had an end-of-freedom feel, but this was different. In less than twelve hours, all this would be over. I wasn’t ready for it to end. Wasn’t ready to break up with someone I’d barely met.

I was fashing about trying to work out some way to reschedule, or stay, or do things differently. ‘I could ring Sue and put her off for another week.’

‘No,’ said Scott, ‘I don’t want to be chasing time with you.’ There was a simple truth to the way he said that. It caught me by surprise. ‘If this is meant to work, there’ll be all the time in the world for us.’

If this is meant to work? Was this ever going to be anything more than a holiday romance?

‘Sue’s a big girl. I’m sure she can spend a few days in New York on her own.’

‘No,’ he said firmly, ‘I can’t do anything about my deadlines next week, and nothing’s to be gained but desperation over a few fleeting hours.’

It’s so rare to be living in a movie moment, but that’s what it felt like. All the midday movies I’d watched with my mother during rainy school holidays – Waterloo Bridge, Casablanca, Now Voyager. Here I was with my own Gary Cooper saying if we had any future at all, we had all the time in the world.

But we didn’t. Did we?
