1. Don’t Toady. Bow

It’s annoying to them if you’re a fanboy. It’s distracting to them if you make them behave like a teacher rather than like a contractor.

2. Define Your Business Objectives

Ultimately you’re working to execute a task. Your relationship is defined not by an amorphous “collaboration” but by the business milestones you agree upon mutually. Define the finish line.

3. Don’t Expect a Curriculum

Yes, you want to learn from them, but this education should come organically. They are the master, you are the student, so create an environment that allows them to do what they’re best at, and then learn through osmosis.

4. Don’t Project Your Professional Crush onto Them

Just because you have love for them doesn’t mean they have it for you.

5. Don’t Brag About It

Never use it as social currency. The only currency should be the success of the final product that you did together. Otherwise you’ll be perceived as some kind of professional star fucker. You did a job with them, great, but that’s just one of many things that will grow the professional body of work that defines your brand. It doesn’t give you a Boy Scout badge.
