Eight

I suck in a shocked breath, my eyes wide like saucers. Did he just say what I think he said?

"I want you to feel that for me.”

No, I shake my head. That can't be right. The Sean I know wouldn't say those words to me. Or even think of saying them to me.

But the look in his eyes is telling me otherwise. That maybe I didn't hear him wrong at all.

He swallows hard. "Kenzie."

My heart starts to pick up pace. Something's happening here.

"Um," I lick my lips nervously.

"Dammit, I'm doing this wrong." He runs a hand through his hair in clear frustration. Then takes a deep breath and blurts out, "I have feelings for you."

“W-What kind of feelings?”

“What do you think?”

No.

At my stunned expression, he chokes out a laugh. "Did... Did I shock you?"

Shock me? I'm completely dumbfounded, my heartbeat practically thundering in my ears. He just dropped a freaking bomb on me. I am so stunned all I can do is gape up at him.

Because, seriously, holy crap!

"Y-You have feelings for me?" I croak.

He nods, staring at me with sharp intensity. He takes in another breath. "I like you, Kenzie. I like you a lot. Always have since middle school."

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.

"Aren't you even going to say anything?" he prods after a long moment of me just gaping at him.

"Are you playing me? Is this a prank?"

"What? No!" He looks affronted.

I narrow my eyes at him, suspicion growing inside me as seconds tick by. "If this is one of your tricks..."

It has to be. Because what he’s saying is completely insane!

"One of my tricks?" Disbelief crosses his features before they darken. "You know what? Forget about it." Hurt flashes in his eyes as he shakes his head. "I should've known."

My eyes widen. "You're really serious?"

His only response is gritting his teeth, eyes trained down below, a tinge of color on his cheeks.

"You do like me," I breathe.

His cheeks redden even more.

"Wow." I blink and shake my head. Then blink and shake my head again. I feel like I’m starting to look like an idiot so I brush off the shock-filled haze to clear my head. But, really, how else am I supposed to react to his confession? That’s when something finally occurs to me. "If you have feelings for me all this time, then why do you keep on pissing me off? Seriously, you've done nothing but bully me."

"I'm not a bully," he scoffs.

I simply give him an “are you for real” look.

He rolls his eyes. "I'm just pranking you. And it's not like you don't give as good as you got."

I open my mouth to argue but then quickly close it. Because Sean's right. I always make sure to get back at him for all his pranks, sometimes even going as far as trying to one-up him. Case in point: the laxative incident.

I guess that makes me just as bad as him.

"You're right," I grumble.

Not that I’m feeling remorseful or anything. Save for the laxative incident, he deserved each payback.
