Establish rhythm.

Start well, using your icebreaker.

Transition from icebreaker to agenda.

Share experiences and add value to each other: she goes first; or

you go first.

Keep being an Alpha Dog (don't be subordinated).

Confirm next steps.

1. Establish rhythm

It's easy to talk too much. Especially when you're nervous.

Annoyingly, it's also easy to talk too little, and become a nod-along Beta Dog. Especially when an Executive uses your meeting to expand on her achievements.

Neither approach works. One of you bores or frustrates the other.

So it's best to have a broad plan as to how you want the meeting to run. By that, I mean know who you expect to be talking to, about what, and when. For example, early on, I want the Executive to be speaking approximately 80% of the time. Not 50%. And certainly not 0%. I can then use this as a way of timing my interventions and retaining control of the meeting.
