I had the honor of meeting His Holiness Pope John Paul II four times during my White House assignment. Here, President Clinton introduces me to the pontiff in October of 1995. (WHITE HOUSE PHOTO)

“Hey, Doc, are you done in there?” asked Ralph. I knew I would never live down this moment with him, but I didn’t care. I didn’t want to flood the compartment.

I opened the door quickly. “Ralph, I’ve got a problem here…” I confessed as he looked in at the overflowing toilet.

“You sure do, Doc,” Ralph said. “Let me get the captain.”

I didn’t stay for the arrival of the captain. Perhaps I should have remained at the scene of the crime, but I just couldn’t handle any more attention that afternoon on the yacht. Apparently the captain was able to stop the flooding. To Ralph’s credit, he never took a photograph of the flooding toilet nor of my embarrassed face that day on the king’s yacht. But he didn’t have to record it. We both remembered it, and for weeks after the event, I would avoid using the bathroom anytime Ralph was present. And I would also avoid fainting, flirtatious kings on future trips abroad.
