Did Vikings Really “Go Berserk”?

In many historical accounts, and in much of pop culture, Vikings are synonymous with ferocious violence. The medieval sagas attribute the wildest and most bloodthirsty feats to warriors sometimes called berserkers or berserks, which literally translates to bear shirts. Snorri Sturluson, one of the most famous authors of the Icelandic sagas, described berserkers as Odin’s mystical warriors in his thirteenth-century poem Ynglings Saga:
