Corbin let himself drift. He was flat on his back, staring at the bluest sky he could remember seeing. He knew that couldn’t be right—he’d seen blue skies before, especially during summer—but everything was more in that moment. Maybe it was because they weren’t in Gillham, or maybe because they didn’t have to think about anything but having fun. Surprisingly, Corbin didn’t care. He just knew he liked the feeling, and he wanted it to last forever.

It wasn’t like him. He was usually always on guard, always looking around, checking if there were any dangers, but the water helped lull him, and he loved it.

A hand landed on his stomach, and he didn’t even jerk—much. Jago looked down at him, the smile that hadn’t left his face since they’d arrived at the house still there, still beautiful.

Corbin got his feet under himself and stood, water cascading down his body. “Jago.”

“Hey. Dinner’s almost ready. I wasn’t sure if you wanted to shower before we eat.”

Corbin looked at the beach and the house beyond it. He could see Thomas had started the barbecue and was busy in front of it while Nysys laughed and Keenan poked him with his naked foot. Craig appeared, carrying a platter of meat, and kissed Thomas’ cheek as he put the platter beside him.

It was domestic, and for the first time, Corbin felt part of something bigger than just him and Jago.

He couldn’t feel close to Kameron and Zach. It had to do with how his subconscious still considered them his masters, no matter how many times they told him it was bullshit.

“Can we swim again after dinner?” he asked, looking at Jago.

The sun was setting, and it illuminated Jago from behind. His red hair seemed even redder in the light, almost as if Jago’s head was aflame. His pale skin had pinked, even though he’d asked Corbin to slather him with enough sunscreen to last a lifetime.

Corbin didn’t often find things beautiful—beauty had no place in an assassin’s life—but right then, Jago was exactly that, and it shocked Corbin that he was allowed to touch him, to make love to him. No one would tell him he couldn’t. No one would take Jago away.

Jago was his, for the rest of his life.

Corbin wasn’t sure what came over him, but he reached out and grabbed Jago, pulling him into his arms and holding onto him as tight as he could without hurting him.

Jago gasped, but he didn’t hesitate to return the hug, letting Corbin hold his weight up, the water gently lapping at their waists.

“We can swim whenever and for as long as you want to,” Jago murmured. “That’s why we’re here. To have fun. To show you everything that’s outside pack territory.”
