When Salmon got home, he found the whisky bottle and poured himself a large measure. The glass rattled against his teeth as he took it down, then he held onto the kitchen drainer, eyes closed, and fought to dampen down the trembling that raced through his entire body.

He should phone Mrs. Winston. If nothing else, he should do that. Jesus, what the fuck was Charlie doing out there like that? He hadn’t been at the meeting, and it hadn’t even crossed Salmon’s mind to wonder where he might be. There was no reason for him to be there, because Charlie wouldn’t have a say, not being anyone of any importance. He would only be needed to clear away the things before school the next day.

And that was when it hit him, like a punch in the face.

It was obvious. It must have been Charlie driving the lorry, making his way to school to tidy up after the meeting. The fucker must have realised what he had done, heard Salmon calling him those names and run back to give him a good hiding! Jesus.

Salmon squeezed a thumb and forefinger into his eyes. “Jesus,” he said aloud. He really should phone Mrs. Winston.

Instead, he poured himself another whisky, stumbled into his living room and fell into the sofa. He took a good drink, put the glass on the floor and sank back and allowed himself a moment or two to rest before he made his decision.

He fell asleep almost immediately.
