BIRMINGHAM

Maybe I should cancel Amanda’s plans. I’d agreed to go just moments before and already I was having doubts. I need the money but what if something terrible happens to me? My stomach was twisting with painful anxiety and I winced. I had promised myself that I wouldn’t do anything like this again, but looking around at my empty flat I knew I had no choice but to go through with it. I had been backed into a corner. The place was freezing and, as I sat alone shivering on the sofa, I decided I needed to text my youth worker. At least someone will know where I am, I told myself. Just in case.

I wrote: I’m going away to Birmingham for a few days. If you don’t hear from me, ring the police. No sooner had I pressed send than I had an incoming call.

‘What on earth is going on?’ my youth worker asked. As soon as she started speaking I panicked, unsure of what I should tell her.

‘Nothing,’ I lied, cringing as my voice squeaked. ‘I’m just going to Birmingham.’ I can’t tell her the truth.

‘But why are you going all the way to Birmingham?’ she persisted. ‘Your text has really concerned me, Samantha.’

‘Just to chill,’ I replied, racking my brains to try and come up with a plausible excuse. ‘Because my friend’s going,’ I added.

‘What’s your friend’s name?’ she continued, and I knew by the tone of her voice that she didn’t believe me. Suddenly I was stumped. I could hardly give her Amanda’s name after I’d already reported her.

‘Um, I don’t remember,’ I blurted out, losing control of my fabricated story. ‘I have to go.’ Before she could respond, I hung up the phone and, embarrassed, I threw it to the other side of the sofa. I couldn’t bear to read her inevitable follow-up text. All I needed was for someone to know where I was going, I reassured myself. That’s all that matters.

Satisfied that people would be looking for me if something went wrong, I went to sleep but, the next day, the knots in my stomach only tightened. Reluctantly I prepared to leave. Amanda had set it up so that when I reached the Tesco near my flat that evening, a black BMW would be waiting for me in the car park. As I headed out of the door, I picked up a knife from the kitchen and tucked it into my pocket. So I can protect myself, I thought and, with that, I left.

Just as she had planned, a black BMW was in the car park. As I approached the car I noticed two Asian men sat in the front seats watching me. Be brave, I told myself, and walked up to them. When I got closer they both looked me up and down before one rolled down a window.

‘Did Amanda send you?’ I asked, leaning over the window as I spoke. ‘I’m Sam.’

The driver glanced over at the other man before turning back.
