It wasn’t posed, and it wasn’t planned.

It was a candid of my wild little Rapunzel: pouf-sleeves and tennis shoes, marching independently toward a magical adventure of her own making. Her hand clasped the wand, while the stuffed animal cart was just out of sight from the picture’s frame. I knew exactly what she had done next. I could practically hear her tiny voice and laughter bubbling up.

“Bibbidi, Bobbidi, BOO!”

My eyes grew blurry at the thought, and all of a sudden, six little words popped in my head.

Words that every parent, every adult, and every human thinks at certain times in life:

I wish time would slow down.

The day had been magical, but it was over before I knew it. And yeah, I know what everyone says: “Time flies when you are having fun.”

But you know what else is true?

Time flies when you’re in a hurry.

As parents, we do our best to plan memorable moments. To create and capture every picture-perfect memory we can. From the second our babies are born, we get this instinctual sense we are on the clock, and the panic sets in. There’s an urgency to relish every second and every moment.

We want to make it all count.

But what if we are so busy trying to make it count that we are missing the forest for the trees? What if, in our efforts to bring our children through the world in a series of picture-perfect moments, we miss the moments when they stop and discover the magic for themselves?

It occurred to me as I laid in bed scrolling through Lion King pictures, that I had literally dragged my daughter away from watching one of God’s greatest creatures . . . so she could watch people in costume pretend to be those same creatures.

“Hurry up, Holland. Come with me. That magic is over here!”

I was so busy hurrying her along to my next awesome plan that I neglected to remember: life’s most magical moments are rarely the ones we have scheduled.

Let’s be honest, Mamas. If you look back on life’s most cherished memories, how many of them happened on a schedule?

(Spoiler alert: they don’t.)

They happen right before school, when you are running late and the lunches aren’t packed. They happen when you and your husband are in a fight, and suddenly your baby figures out a new word and his eyes twinkle with excitement. They happen when you’re running through the parking lot with your arms full of groceries, and a monsoon unloads on the entire family. Then there’s spontaneous puddle splashing and laughter, and the whole family sings songs, soaking wet on the car ride home.
