The next thing I knew, I was in Devan’s strong arms, being carried and placed with great care into his car. I tried to speak to let him know that I was all right, and I’d just gotten dizzy, but I was still too out of it. The moment he buckled me in, I passed out again, my head throbbing hard.

“Ori, wake up, we’re at Howling General,” I heard a voice say from a distance. I forced my eyes open and looked around. I was in Devan’s BMW, and we were in an underground parking lot.

“Devan Puckett?” I murmured, still a little confused and disoriented from my fall. I gave him a wry smile. “Hey, handsome.”

He laughed, but I could see the concern on his face. “Yeah, that’s right. Do you think you can walk in, or do I need to carry you?”

“I can walk,” I insisted. He got out of the car and quickly came around to open my door and even undo my seatbelt for me. Determined to show my independence, I forced myself to my feet.

My vision went black and tingly, and I nearly fell flat on my face this time, but Devan swooped in and grabbed me before I could finish tripping over my own feet. “Nope,” he decided. “I’m carrying you.”

I didn’t have the energy to protest.

Devan brought me inside and immediately asked for Dr. Kilbourne. I didn’t know who that was, but Devan seemed to know the handsome young doctor, an omega wolf by the scent of him, and we were very quickly given a room. I felt a little guilty. I was pretty sure I knew what was happening to me, and it wasn’t an emergency, really. I hoped the hospital was slow that night, and we weren’t being given special treatment.

Devan had brought me in naked, wrapped in a blanket, but they gave me hospital robes and I gratefully put them on and lay back in the hospital bed, resting my eyes and my dizzy head. The omega doctor joined us again shortly. He smelled sort of like Devan, which confused me. Were they part of the same pack?

“Hello, Ori. I’m Doctor Harvey Kilbourne. I’m just going to run some tests, if you don’t mind, listen to your heart and your lungs and take your blood pressure, the usual.”

I nodded my consent and let him do as he needed to, reaching for Devan’s hand. Devan squeezed mine firmly, and Harvey glanced at our hands, a thoughtful look crossing his face.

“Well, you’ve got low blood pressure, so that would explain the dizzy spells. Do you mind if we take a little blood here? I want to run a few levels just to make sure.”

I felt sick with worry and leaned over, dry-retching toward the garbage can by my bed. Nothing came up. I had barely eaten.

Devan immediately stood and stroked over my back, and the doctor seemed even more concerned.

“Ori?” he asked. I sat back. “Take deep breaths,” he reminded me, and I nodded, doing my best.
