THE NEXT WITNESS was Leslie Gaines, who had been driving home the evening before Peggy was murdered. Gaines had lived on Landings and said she saw a woman who looked like Peggy walking down the street around midnight. When the police canvassed the neighborhood the next day, she had told them that she may have seen Peggy Hettrick walking along Landings the night before.

When we broke for lunch, the attorneys, witnesses, and spectators all got up and walked out of the courtroom. I went through a routine I would become very familiar with during my time in court. A deputy shackled my feet and handcuffed me. He led me down into the basement of the building and then out the back to a county transport van. We drove back to the county jail and I was put into a small holding cell by myself. The cell had a sink, a toilet, and a bench. They gave me a sack lunch, and I sat in there for the hour and ate it by myself. At the end of the hour, they came and got me and took me back to court.
