Chapter Seventeen

TUESDAY MORNING, Sam scanned the correspondence that came through the system. He left Adam sleeping soundly in his bed when he snuck out into the cold on his way to the hospital, and now his mind was back in that bedroom with Adam. Memories came in flashes of naked skin and breathless gasps. Sex with Adam was like nothing he’d ever experienced before. It was as though he’d lived his life eating nothing but peanut butter sandwiches, and suddenly Adam had introduced him to the Bellagio buffet.

He had a difficult time concentrating on the mundane policy reports and clinical summaries when there were much better things to be thinking about. That is until his gaze raked across one piece of correspondence that had him perking to attention. The DNA report on Daniel Rosnor’s case. He opened the file and scanned through the findings, sighing in satisfaction when he saw there was DNA found not belonging to the victim.

It didn’t mean police could match it with someone, but it was something to go on, and it meant when they found the person who killed Daniel, the case against him would be much more compelling.

He picked up his phone and dialed Jack’s number.

Jack answered a moment later.

“Hi, Jack, it’s Sam.”

“I just saw it,” Jack said, not waiting for Sam to explain why he was calling. Apparently the reason was obvious, and apparently the reason pleased Jack, because he sounded happier than Sam had ever heard him.

“How long will it take to run it through the data bank?”

“It shouldn’t take too long at all, assuming our perp is in the system. I’ll be surprised if he isn’t. A guy doesn’t generally begin his criminal career with rape and murder, especially one this grisly. Do you want me to give you a call when we have a name?”

“Yes. Please.”

“It’s not policy, but I know how invested you are in this case. We’re going to get this asshole.”

“Thanks, Jack. I appreciate you keeping me in the loop.”

“No problem.”

Sam hung up a moment later and sat back in his chair, a deep satisfaction settling over him. He’d swabbed the body so meticulously, and his care paid off. DNA. There was no better clue in a case, and now all he could do was wait and hope the data bank came back with a hit. Soon Daniel’s killer would face the justice system. He’d been trained well on how to be a compelling expert witness. He knew Jack and his partner Greer would build an airtight collection of evidence for the prosecution, and Sam was a part of that. This was personal for him. He’d do everything he could to make sure whoever hurt Daniel would never see the light of day again.

It was moments like this that made all those years of school and all the hours spent alone in the basement morgue of the hospital worth it. When he was able to help someone, something tangible that made his efforts worthwhile, there was nothing better than that.
