Judge Arthur Tuttle presided over “Steel Wheel Corp. vs. B.F. Goodrich Tire Company” in federal court in Detroit. Mulford came to Michigan to testify on behalf of the Ohio tire maker, and told this story: In 1919 Mulford had brought his Special Roadster to the B.F. Goodrich plant in Akron to have it fitted for a pair of the new tires the company was starting to sell—balloon tires. He had seen a similar style at the Goodyear plant the year before, and had even told company officials, “Since there’s no name for a tire like these, I’m going to suggest we call them balloon tires.” The name stuck.

All of this had taken place six years before Putnam filed for his patent. As proof, Mulford presented a postmarked letter he’d written to his wife shortly after his 1919 visit to Akron that confirmed his story. Judge Tuttle ruled in favor of Goodrich, and thousands of tire workers in Ohio breathed a collective sigh of relief. After reading the verdict, the judge went for a celebratory ride in the Special Roadster with Mulford—a photo of the two men sitting in the roadster grinning at the camera made the front page in the Detroit Free Press and other newspapers the next day.
