Besides his horrendous record of murder, abuse of human rights, and political repression, he was an incompetent ruler who seriously damaged and mismanaged Uganda’s once healthy economy. In 1972, he expelled the Asian minority, mostly Indian and Pakistani merchants and their families, from Uganda. This population played an outsized role in running local businesses and contributing to the country’s economy. It was the beginning of Uganda’s decline under Amin’s dictatorship.

Amin’s relatively short reign was far less successful than Stalin’s or Mao’s, but among the important psychological traits he shared with his fellow despots was his resentment of intellectuals. Thousands of elite well-educated Ugandans under Amin’s rule lost their freedom, and many their lives, because of Amin’s resentment and insecurities.
