Almost an hour later, I’ve washed, changed my crumpled and ratty looking travel clothes, and checked in on Nate twice. Both times he’s irritably called through the closed bathroom door that he was coming. Both times the sound of running water muffled his anger, but it was there, and that was a good start—better that than drunken indifference.

It still didn’t stop me from wanting to break down the door to check he wasn’t sticking something up his nose. Or worse.

I was no closer to knowing what the hell had happened to set my big brother on the road to destruction, but I was determined to find out. Until I did, I couldn’t begin to help him, and no matter how much he was protesting right now, I had to remember he’d asked for my help. And that had to count for something.

The doorbell ringing had me rushing from my spot in the doorway of Nate’s room—a space that surprised me as although it was a mess, it wasn’t half as bad as the rest of the house. Yes, it stank of booze, sweat and sex, but it didn’t appear to be caked in filth like the rest of this place.

When I get to the foyer, I yank open the front door to see a team of uniformed cleaners before me. The lady at the front of the group of six is smiling broadly at me from behind funky red polka dot glasses.

She has the same uniform on as the others—purple polo shirt with the cleaning company logo across her chest, and dark shorts—but from under the short sleeves emerges the riotous colour of full-sleeve tattoos. Her nose and ears are pierced multiple times, and another jewel adorns one of her eyebrows. She looks like a young Amy Winehouse but with more tats and body piercings.

“Scrub-a-dub-dub, at your service,” Amy’s doppelganger says cheerily, extending an inked arm and offering me her hand to shake. “We’ve got a contract for six, but with an option to bring in more if you need us. Just say the word.”

Her smile is bright and friendly, and her handshake firm and vigorous. I like her already.

“Come in—” I step back and motion the way “—maybe you should tell me if you need more bodies. This place is a tip, I apologise in advance.” And then I suddenly realise she might think I was responsible for all this filth, and tack on quickly, “It’s my brother’s place. He’s been—” I search for a suitable word and settle on “—absent… for a while and God knows what’s been going on here.”

“Not a problem,” Amy’s twin replies with a wide smile. “We’ve probably seen worse. Why don’t you let us assess the room, and I’ll let you know if I’m calling in the rest of the squad.”

“Rooms,” I offer with a grimace.

“I’m sorry?”

“You said room. It’s rooms, as in multiple, as in the whole house and the back garden.” My expression turns into a full facial contortion when I
