Sunspots appear in pairs, although the pairings are not always visually distinct. Because these features change, pairs can be observed at different stages of their development, but not at every stage. This also depends on their size and which instruments are being used to record or observe them.

The Sun has a tug of war between the complex processes of magnetism and convection within it. The sunspot pairs have opposite charges. They are cooler surface areas, which are caused by the magnetic field hindering the convection process on and beneath the Sun’s surface. The cooler area of the sunspot is indicative of the downdraft vortex beneath its surface. Other features such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CME) start in areas where sunspots are visible.
