Revelations at the Red House

It is always a shock to travel from the southern hemisphere back to the north – especially in December. I swapped the desert’s summer swelter for a wind-battered family Christmas at my sister’s house, perched high on a Welsh mountainside, but the Kalahari followed me there, as luck would have it, with the arrival of Andrea and her daughter Alexandra from Ghanzi. She had come over, partly to look into marketing her Bushman tourism idea, and partly to see family.

I was preoccupied with the healer Besa, and asked Andrea if she had heard of him. He was quite famous around Ghanzi, she said, though she hadn’t heard of him for some years. I made up my mind to get back out there as soon as possible. However, it took me a few months of freelancing to raise the necessary funds to go in search of Besa, especially as the trip would also have to be long enough for me to follow up the Xhomani story and get to some other parts of the Kalahari I hadn’t yet seen.

But in April 1998, I was on a plane back to the Kalahari.
