After calibration, these models are used for recalculating the actual savings that the building has achieved compared to the baseline, and for testing operations strategies and retrofit scenarios in the future. Calibrated models can also be used for recommissioning the building.

Mixing Modeling Tools

Different building systems are sized, analyzed, designed, and specified using system-specific tools. Lighting systems are evaluated for target illuminance levels, and chillers are sized for cooling load. In a low-energy integrated design both need to be optimized to work together, for example, where daylighting controls reduce lighting and cooling loads. Similarly, the design of windows and interior surface colors can affect the daylight, which in turn has an impact on the lighting power and subsequently on the cooling load on the chiller. Very few simulation tools available today can use the same building model and connect these different pieces. Usually, daylighting and lighting are modeled in separate tools, and natural ventilation is modeled separately with CFD software. Typically, the nuanced results from these design optimization tools cannot be directly shared with whole building energy analysis tools, which are in themselves incapable of modeling these nuances. Indeed, even a simple concave ceiling optimized for daylight cannot be modeled in most whole building simulation tools. The result of this disintegration of tools is that modelers perform simulations of sophisticated system designs in disparate tools. Expert modelers then translate the results from these tools into work-around approaches to model them with the limited inputs available in the whole building energy analysis tools.
