The majority of beef and dairy cattle in the United States are fed grain, primarily corn. This is because corn is a cheap source of feed, and it fattens the cattle quickly. Grain-fed beef tends to be fattier than grass-fed. In general, these cattle are raised in factory farming operations that house thousands of cattle in small pens. Due to the packed real estate these cows inhabit, they often stand, sit, and sleep in feces. Disease can spread easily among factory-farmed cattle, which may make it more likely for this type of beef to bear foodborne pathogens.
