These factors play a significant role in the complementary context, but they are often seen as an optional extra and, perhaps due to increasing financial (managerial) constraints, they are often left out of a standard biomedical approach. The degree to which the hidden healing ensemble is undervalued differs between countries. For example, it is noticeably absent from highly managerialized medical contexts such as in the UK and USA; but in Belgium and Switzerland it is relatively accepted that a comprehensive battery of measures and policies is necessary to deal with health disorders (World Health Organization, 2013: 64). It is perhaps ironic that measures implemented to save money may do the opposite. For example, several studies have shown that when complementary therapies are used for podalic malposition and labour pain there are significant reductions in costs; some estimate savings of hundreds of Euros per patient (World Health Organization, 2013: 64; van den Berg et al., 2010; Manyande and Grabowska, 2009).

In the next chapter, we will consider in more detail how a critical realist conception of interdisciplinarity can guide health and wellbeing professionals at each stage of the medical programme, from initially deciding on whether or not a disease exists, to finding a cure and healing it. We consider this process to include seven key stages, which we call the seven enigmas of healing.
