WHICH DIRECTION SHOULD I GO?
The trail descriptions in this book are written in the clockwise direction, as that’s how the majority of hikers travel. However, I’ve made occasional notations for counterclockwise hikers, should you choose the direction less traveled.
As you ponder which direction to backpack the trail, be comforted by knowing that both clockwise and counterclockwise offer fantastic mountain views and great vistas. No matter which direction you go, you’ll also find challenges and tough sections that hold hands with wild beauty and gentle grades. The Wonderland Trail makes you earn your bragging rights for completion, and neither direction is a cinch. Either way, you are going up and coming back down roughly 22,000 feet of elevation gain and loss over hills and valleys.
