The critical moment has now arrived. Lift the pad in the right hand, keeping its front edge pointing downwards and immediately put the left hand pad over the spot just uncovered, doing it in such a way that there is no possibility of the spectators discovering that the card has been removed. Move the right hand pad to cover the supposed ace of spades at the lower left corner, asking if the aces at the other two corners are still visible. Finally move the right hand pad up to the ace of clubs and leave it there, dropping the ace of hearts secretly and, with the left hand, release its pad which is supposed to cover the ace of diamonds.

Take hold of the lower left corner of the newspaper with the left hand, thumb above, fingers below, and lift it a couple of inches. With the right hand pick up the ace of spades, calling it the ace of hearts, thrust it under the paper at the corner raised by the left hand and push the hand under the paper up to the point above which the ace of clubs is covered by the pad but, as the right hand passes the left hand, leave the ace of spades between the left first and second fingers, allowing not the least hesitation in the passage of the right hand. Retain your hold of the left corner of the paper with your left hand.

Order the ace of hearts to pass upwards through the paper to join the ace of clubs. With the right hand lift the pad covering the ace of clubs and show two cards lying there. Pass the pad back to the left hand, which takes it with the thumb above and the fingers below, thus bringing the ace of spades below it secretly. Turn the ace of hearts face upwards with the right hand to prove that it has obeyed orders. Also turn the ace of clubs face upwards.

Place the pad in the left hand over these two aces, leaving them face upwards, and secretly drop the ace of spades with the pad. Again lift the left corner of the newspaper with the left hand, pick up the supposed ace of spades with the right hand and repeat exactly the same operations to pass it, apparently, through the newspaper to join the ace of clubs and the ace of hearts. When you lift the pad to show its arrival, pass the pad back to the left hand to bring the ace of diamonds secretly under it. Turn the ace of spades face upwards. When you replace the pad over the three aces and secretly drop the ace of diamonds, the tally becomes complete, unknown, of course, to the spectators.

To complete the illusion all that is required is the apparent passage of the ace of diamonds which is supposed to be under the pad at the right lower corner of the newspaper. You say that you will pass
